December 12, 1899

The first golf tee in the U.S., it is invented by Grant, the second African-American graduate of Harvard Dental School and the first appointed to its faculty. A former resident of 108 Charles Street and a regular golfer at Franklin Park, Grant’s device improves on the previous practice of mounding up sand to elevate the golf ball when driving.
